I'm not sure if this has bothered anyone else, but its been bugging me recently. I've noticed a huge percentage of the kami are gendered as male. Only Carpo is gendered as female. This may seem like a silly idea, but would it be possible for future events/kami to make them either genderless or more female? I'm not saying make them frilly or pink or anything, just maybe a bit more equal?

I guess since I'm coming from pokemon games where nearly all legendaries are genderless, gendering a god seems a bit unnecessary to me, especially when they can't breed.

SO! While I don't have any proposed ideas yet as to what these future kamis may be, I just thought I'd through this idea out as it is! We could probably build something around the idea of having no sex/gender.

Please tell me your thoughts bellow.

Most of the Kamis are assumed to have the same gender, if they could be said to have a gender at all. Because neutral gender didn't exist until relatively recently, the default was set as male until Carpo, who was specifically characterized as a female diety. But I think the actual intention is that Kamis are genderless, since as you mentioned, you can't breed them anyway. If future events were to feature neutral gender Kamis, it would seem to imply that past Kamis were male for a reason, when in fact they're not.

Although, there's been hints that we will be seeing at least two more female Kamis in the future, so you can hope for that, at least.

There is'nt really a purpose for this for two reasons. They can't breed so gender doesnt matter, and if you want any of your kamis to be the other gender you can change them with a change sex scroll (i've done it before for kicks and giggles). So if you have one you keep wanting to be a female but it is labeled as male, go ahead and change him to a her :D

And im not sure, but im assuming a neutering syrum would also work.

I tried the serum, but its doesn't work because they're already non breedable.

That'd good to know about the scroll though, thanks!

Oh, I would of thought the serum would work. That's a weird reason though. On that same rule the sex scroll should also not work but last I checked it does.

What if you got to choose the Kami's gender when you achieve it? It seems like such a waste to use a change sex scroll on an unbreedable pet.

Why do people care about gender Kami? Its not like it does anything... :\ ???

I think there are actual mythological foundations for all the Kami genders.  It's just that the first ones were males.  Here's my reasoning:

Apocalypse: In European tradition, the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse have been represented as male for centuries, and the theme here is clear, So it makes sense for our "4 Horses", if you will, to be male

Gate to the Dreamlands: These are inspired from Lovecraft (by the way, I am really impressed by this).  I expect, although I haven't researched it thoroughly, that their genders are faithful to their characters of inspiration.

Cure the Love: I think that Amor is probably based on Cupid.  Once again, his mythological predecessor is male, so it makes sense for him to be male.

Hoppers: No idea on this front.  Maybe hoppers are protandrous sequential hermaphrodites (translation: they start life as a male and then switch to female at a certain age/ size/ environment).  Maybe only males hatch from eggs, and females are born in some different way, like staying in the mother's pouch?

Carpo: Her mythological basis is an ancient Greek goddess.  Based on a quick browse through Wikipedia, I expect the other 2 members of the seasonal triad to be female as well.  I'm looking forward to the reveal of the designs.

Drakes: As artificial life forms, I'm not sure why they are gendered, except that their in-world story is that they are created by merging the energy of Kami from the portal with Dragons and Cockatrices.  Since most of the Kami that have come through the Warlock's portal have been male, I guess it makes sense for the drakes to be male.

As several people have noted, the genders have little effect on gameplay, so I think the imbalance will be rectified slowly over time as more female mythology backgrounds are incorporated.

tl;dr : They have specific genders because reasons, not because no one was paying attention.

I often have some good pets in my Pound/Giveaways tab.  Feel free to ask for one of them.

After diving through the internet and the H.P. Lovecraft wiki, it seems that shantaks, byakhees, and cats from saturn are species of creature, not the names of unique entities. (I couldn't find the butterfly dragon anywhere except a "field guide to the Dreamlands" created decades after Lovecraft's death, but the illustration bears a very close resemblance to the Kami.) So there would be no reason for these creatures to be male or female in particular.

I think it would be a stretch to justify exclusively male gender for the hoppers, because they are clearly mammals, which cannot exhibit sequential hermaphroditism. Because they lay eggs, they would probably be considered monotremes.

You have a good point with the diety Kamis, though (the Horsemen, Amor, and Carpo), but in actuality, the default gender for Kamis was set as male, as confirmed by this thread here.

I don't think this is nescesary due mostly to Carpo. as mentioned above she is part of a female triad. it also proven that her sisters will be coming here at some point so there will be females in the future. this suggestion is already in the makes and is therefore unneeded.
