Arka sighed. “I'm really sorry Elise.”

Elise looked up. “What do you mean?”

“I...I was the one who lost him,” Arka admitted. “We were playing together and I lost sight of him. I'm sorry.”

Elise frowned. “It's not your fault. You just couldn't see where he went.”

Arka nodded. “We'll find him. I know we will.” Arka watched as the patrol of wolves left with Frost in the lead.

Arka caught up with Frost. “Wait!”

Frost stopped, letting the wolves pass him. “What is it?”

I want to go, it's my fault. “Um, I...” Arka stammered.

Arka raised her snout. “I want to go with you.”

Frost nodded. “Alright. Stick with the other wolves, please.”

The wolves headed out, Arka with them, and Frost told them to split up and look for scents, but not to go too far.

Arka suddenly caught Spark's scent. No one else seems to smell it...weird.

Arka raised her head. “I can smell Spark's scent!” she howled.

The wolves around her looked at her. One growled. “And why should we trust a new member? I can't smell anything. We have no reason to trust you!” he snarled.

Frost growled at him, then turned to Arka. “Where does it lead?”

Arka pointed with her nose. The wolf who snarled before growled again. “See! She's leading us to our doom! That goes straight into Shade Pack territory!”

Arka snarled. “I'm not lying! I had no idea where it went!” She whirled around and plunged into the forest, paws following the scent.

Suddenly Arka stopped.

“What is it?” Frost's voice came from the trees. He'd followed.

Arka paused to sniff deeply. “Its...oh no. Crow!”

Frost growled. “He must've taken Spark! I'll go get the rest of the wolves.” Frost turned and ran back into the trees.

Arka snarled at Crow's scent trail. Frost returned with the rest of the wolves.

Arka looked behind her, and carefully followed the path until everyone could smell it.

Frost signaled them to a halt. “Shade Pack camp. We have to be careful about what we do next. Anybody have any ideas?”

Arka's ears perked with a sudden idea. “We could roll in a stronger scent than our own, and sneak in.”

Frost nodded. “Good idea.”

“Wait, our plan is to roll in mud?” the wolf from earlier snorted.

Frost growled. “Do you have any better ideas Shard?”

The wolf, Shard, fell silent. Arka quickly looked around for some mud.

“I don't think there is any. The trees are too close together to let rain through,” Arka barked.

Frost nodded. “Well we aren't going to roll in mud, so...the pine needles! We'd smell like the forest, so they wouldn't notice!”

Arka nodded and watched the other wolves begin the pluck pine neeedles from the trees.

We need something faster!

Arka watched the wolves around her. “We could try fox dung?”

“No.” Shard growled.

Arka growled. “Fine. But is there any way to do this faster?”

“Are you suggesting we grow wings and fly into the trees?” Shard snorted.

Frost paused. “We could do the opposite. If we climb the trees, we could get into the branches.”

Shard rolled his eyes and tried to find a low branch, and the rest of the wolves did the same.

Arka found a branch and scrabbled to get up the tree, frustrated. Arka yelped as paws pushed her up. Arka grabbed the branch then turned to growl to see Frost.
