Sorry I am not a newbie but to get an avatar you go to my account tab my account. Then scroll down till you see avatar then select a file from your device or Internet
its only 7 stories.

JPEG, PNG, and GIF files all work; I just tried them. Though the GIF will only appear as a still image.
