I don't know what happened, but on an island, I encountered a strange, egg looking shrine. My pet walked up, and a sign flashed Female, Gryphon, Nameless, which was what my pet was. Then it asked if I wanted to participate. Curious, I accepted, and it said:

WHAT THE **** HAPPENED???!!!!!!!

There is a picture if you can't tell. It said, and I quote:

A tray at the bottom of the egg opens and you find 10 Vermillion there. A bit later you realize that you will have a child soon. You wonder who is the father.

The picture didn't show up. But the egg-shrine you found is a part of the game, a Fertility Shrine. Depending on what gender your pet is, it does different things. If your pet is male, you can donate your pet's genes to it and you'll receive five vermillion. If your pet is female, you can choose to accept a random breeding from the shrine. Your female pet will then become pregnant with a baby from a male pet that has previously donated its genes. And you will also get vermillion.

Also just an added note: If you accept the breeding with a female pet, this will NOT use up one of its breedings. Meaning, if, according to her genes, your pet could have 16 children over her lifetime, this would count as an extra breeding, for a total of 17 babies from that female. 

This is very practical if you have a great female but you used up all her breedings already.

Of course it's always a gamble, since you never know what kind of genes the father has until afterwards, but you are never wasting your females precious breedings with it.

Hmm, thats good, because she was a pet I was reserving for a certain guy, one with really good genes, most matching hers!
