FYI, salamanders will give colored eggs even if they aren't guarding a treasure chest.

You need to fight the guardians (the red monsters on the map) and they may be holding a colored egg. The treasure chests behind them will not contain any eggs.

Could it be that the "hopper hint" has nothing to do with frequency of eggs? My exploring seems to indicate it doesn't. Could it instead be a hint of another kind? The lucious and exciting thought of a new species arriving for us to collect and breed perhaps?

well the hint says NEW biotopes and the grassland was the first one there so its deffinetaly not new....Im exploring in the jungle and got 6 within few minutes :)
