are there a limited times I can explore in a day? It keeps telling me that there are no islands I the memory of my portal. I swapped out pets a few times to see if that would let me explore, but apparently I can't anymore.

Yes, you get around 20 islands a day, but they regenerate around every hour or so, so after 20 hours of using all of your portals, you will have new ones.
