The maximum number of beasts I can have 20, but I have 21. I counted them up too and I'm not sure why it is like that. Can someone please help?

It's not a bug, it was coded with intention. The pet limit is "soft" so you don't lose any pets when you go beyond the limit. There's a number of cases when this may happen. For example, this is possible with pets from auctions when you bid when there's enough place in your stable, but auction ends when there's no free slots - you still get your pet but over the limit.
