So I just defeated a temple guardian, I've heard you get some silver and usually a premium item, but I didnt get any gold or any items? I know I defeated it because my Lykos hit level 5 because of it.

Yes you get items when you defeat a temple guardian.
You will see a message in the explore window after defeating it. It will look somewhat like this:
You entered a battle and you won!
You gained 95 XP.
You found Scheme: Shell golem (1).
You found Blueprints: Warehouse (lvl 3) (1).
You found Scheme: Hops golem(1).
You found 240
This is from a beast temple one of my pets defeated in 2013 though. Nowadays you usually get only one or two items I believe.. If I recall correctly the amount of items you get was reduced a while back. But at either rate, if you defeat a temple guardian, you will see right away what you got in your log and it's not necessarily premium items. The chance for those is just higher.
