What is Squad Research Potential and how do I use it?

From what I know, Squad Research Potential is how quickly your squad is able to research a way into the Mirror World, in the battlefield. The higher it is, the easier faster your squad can enter the Mirror World Battlefield.
To sum it up, it's used to enter the Mirror World battlefield, adding the amount every hour(?) until it reaches XXXXX. (Forgot how much, think it was around 5000.)
