The * next to a pet's color signifies that the pet will grow up to be a deviant! Rsearching the baby's genes when you see this will reveal on the appropriate genes if the deviance is for pattern or color.

If you're referring to your puma, you bred a Normal deviant. If the deviant gene had been anything but Normal, it would look different, but yours will look the same as a regular Puma.

My first deviant was a Normal too. Kind of a bum deal, but it happens sometimes.

Oh. What happens if it is not a puma? I think my buddy has one...

Go here: http://beastkeeper.com/skin-lib to see every color/pattern outcome possible of every pet in the game. What the pet will look like depends on what genes it has and which gene is deviant. The rows and columns on this chart are labeled to show exactly what any pet will look like given its genes.

Also, not all species have deviant varieties. Pumas, Unicorns, Rocs, and Dragons do, but Gryphons, Cockatrices, Symurghs, Throdamas, and Lykos do not.

Edit: Oh, whoops, didn't realize it posted twice when I tried to edit it. That's annoying. Nightingale, could you remove the first post? Thanks.

Lucky you! Deviants can be quite difficult to breed and can fetch a pretty penny from the auctions! :) I spent at least 8 breedings to get to my last deviant unicorn.

Also, those species Sumatra_Echo do not have deviant patterns yet, who knows what could happen! :P

So if I somehow get, say a deviant unicorn, or something, I would research the genes, then what?

Nothing?

At this time deviance isn't really relevent to normal gameplay aside from the higher prices that can be requested when selling or offering breedings from deviant pets.

Deviance has been important in several past events however. The Amor kami event needed particular deviant colors and deviance has been required or high value in a few exhibitions.

The biggest call for deviance was during the tundra event when lykos were first released. Unlike the other events, this one required you to remove the deviance from your pets.

I wish there were something cool you could do with it. Like maybe deviant animals would get their quests specifically for them, or their fur is sparkly or something...

Huh huh, sparkly...

I suspect that whenever the lykos quests get added there will also be some deviant ones as well.
