I have 110 gold and 66 Silver when trying to purchase an item for 100 silver the message "not enough money" is displayed.
Apologies if I am doing something wrong as I am a newbie

Gold and silver are two different types of currency. They aren't interchangeable and have different game purposes. Silver can be earned only with game actions while gold is premium currency purchased for real cash only. The only way to convert gold to silver is to sell premium items for silver to other players. Otherwise you'll need to earn silver through gameplay.
