This game seems really fun, and I hope I get the hang of it soon!

Do you guys have any tips for me? It would be very useful useful and very much appreciated if you have any for me! I want to specialize in a certain animal but I don't know which one to chose. Whats the best choice?

As for the best pets... There isn't really a "best" pet, They all have pros and cons. Try them all out first, it can't hurt. See what you like and what parts of the games you will be playing most. Are you a collector? A breeder?  A battler, crafter or explorer? 

I like using unicorns because they seem to fit most of what I need. But you need to find what works for you. There is a list of genes here for each species: http://beastkeeper.com/gen-lib Maybe this can help you learn more about each pet? We also have two Alien species (http://beastkeeper.com/alien-species) as well. They are very cool but can be hard to get as a newbie as you can only buy them or win them on the battlefield (the other pets you can capture).
