Like Torhval said: By exporing the islands is right. On the island you can find them in the chests, by defeating a temple beast and you can buy them in special buildings. But it is completely random. For example: One day I have found 7 essences and the other day I haven’t found not a single one.

I still need 2 essence of famin and at least 2 jars of venom.
I have 100 ruby, 50 lazulite, 1 scheme:scythe.

Thanks to generous players, once this round of quests is done I will have everything I need. I still have 5 sacrificial pets and a bow scheme if anyone needs it. Also close to 50 vermillion.
