BOANNAN (boh-ANN-ehn; Female):
We're all familiar with the custom of tossing coins into fountains and wishing wells. I'm sure everyone has done this, regardless of whether one is superstitious or not. The Celts were no different, though they may have taken this action more seriously than we do today. For instance, valuable items such as statues, coins, and even weaponry were offered to Boannan, the Irish goddess of the river Boyne. These items were tossed to the waters out of respect, but also in the hope of securing the healing powers of this potent goddess. This wasn't a situation unique to Boannan and the river Boyne. The Celts had several river goddesses and this ritual of throwing treasures into the watery depths was quite common. In fact, most of the springs and wells used by the Celts were thought of as mystical in one way or another. When Christianity had taken over as the dominant religion, these mystic watering holes managed to retain something of their pagan identity by being thought of as sources of holy water-sites of pilgrimage for countless faithful in search of a healing miracle. If your cat seems to have a knack for soothing your tensions, brightening your foulest of moods, or even bringing you an occasional round of good luck now and then, this might be an appropriate name.

COVENTINA (koh-vehn-TEE-nah; Female):
Isn't this a pretty name? She was another goddess of waters and springs. She was said to travel the rivers and lakes upon a leaf boat. In each hand she held an item that symbolized her domain-one was a cup from which a steady flow of fresh water poured representing the source of all the earth's waterways and lakes; the other was a beautiful water plant symbolizing life which rises from water. A lovely goddess with a charming name suitable for any cat at all.

AMENTI (ah-MEN-tee; Female): Amenti was the goddess of the land of the west. To the Egyptians, "land of the west", was another way of saying "the place you go when you die." If your cat has a habit of climbing trees, Amenti might be a good choice since the goddess was said to have lived in a tree near the World Gates which led to the Western Lands. She was also said to have had beautiful hair, so this name might be appropriate for your cat if she has a lovely coat of fur. Amenti's symbols were the hawk and the feather, and we all know just how much cats like feathers, especially when they are attached to birds. Since she was said to be the mistress of Amun (see next entry) she was sometimes known as "the hidden goddess."
HATHOR (HAH-thor; Female): The goddess of love and guardian of women, known as the queen of the West and protectress of the necropolis of Thebes. Hathor was also a very important mother-figure since it was her nourishing milk upon which the Pharaohs were said to have nursed, thus partaking the essence of divinity. So it was that the Pharaohs were considered her children and therefore gods themselves.
LOUHI (LOW-hee; Female): No, not "Louie". Here's another case where we've got a nice name but a rotten deity. Louhi was the goddess of evil and black magic. Her powers were so fearsome that she was reputed to be able to imprison both the sun and the moon. Still, she was not without friends and supporters. Her home was something of a sorcerer's home away from home where they would party all night long, belting out their ghastly songs of terror and hopelessness.
BANNIK (BAN-ihk; Male): Slavic god of bathing, Bannik. He is said to be a shriveled little old man with a lengthy white beard and radically out of control hair. Bannik occupied the domestic bath-houses, (called Banyas) which were structures kept separate from the Izba-the primary domicile. Anyone using the bath-house was expected to leave an offering of water to show their appreciation. One odd twist to Slavic bath-house etiquette was the observation of a fourfold bathing cycle, with every fourth bath-time reserved for Bannik and his otherworldly spirit friends. This meant that the banya could be used three times in a row, but whoever happened to be the fourth person wishing to use it would just have to wait. It was believed that anyone disrespectful enough to ignore this custom by entering the bath-house before the god was finished would be beaten or perhaps even killed by Bannik or one of the other lounging entities. How you were supposed to know when the spirits were done is anyone's guess. I suspect that whenever someone mustered their courage to take a peek inside the bath-house, they were rewarded by the "all clear" discovery of an empty banya.
DAZHBOG (DAHSH-bog; Male): Slavic sun god, Dazhbog. Dazhbog had it made. He lived in a palace of gold located in an eastern province that enjoyed a perpetual summer. He drove a diamond chariot, had two beautiful women (Dawn and Evening) that lived with him in the palace, had access to any material treasure that could be imagined, and had his youth restored each and every morning. All celestial bodies were at his service-the moon was his wisest advisor, the planets acted as his attendants, and comets were his personal messengers. Some tales have the moon as his wife, the countless stars their children. Dazhbog didn't have a care in the world, which is just as it should be for the god that rules happiness and rewards.
