Each gene has a certain effect.
So if you want a roc with Lightning attack, you MUST have Steal Beak and Electric Gland.
That attack replaces Bite and delivers massive damage.
That's just one example. If you can breed a pet with all good genes, and design a build with the right attacks and defenses you can tailor victory against most opponents.
For example I bred unicorns with Diamond horn, Determined and Magic Mirror to defeat wild etelia - but they were useless against everything else. I went back to using lykos.
