In order for a beast to be deviant, it has to have two copies of the same gene for color or pattern. If that is the case, it will have a 10% chance of being deviant. (Double deviants are also possible, but more complicated. I suggest that you go to FAQ > Genetics and Breeding Questions > 6. How can I breed a pet with a deviant color?)
So basically, you want to use parent beasts that have the same color.
