I've been focusing on getting good cockatrices with the occasional Throdama, I haven't adopted any other kinds of beasts outside the tutorial.
Is there any reason I ought to get more kinds of beasts?

Maybe for quests but its honestly all up to your preference. If you want any other kinds of beasts i'd be happy to gift you some with 3gp (green stars) and nice genes
