I exchanged kelpie liquor for an apparel, is this a recipe or the actual item? I can't figure out how to equip it.

The item! It only works for the species in the name. To equip it you go to a pet's profile and select the "Wardrobe" tab. You'll see a list of apparels you can put on, just select one and press "Update Equipment" and you're done :)
