I have a level 1 and 2 pets that I want to raise their level so I can battle and explore easier. Any advice is helpful

Battling and exploring are ways of levelling up. In fact, battling is the easiest way to gain EXP for your pet.
You can also send them on quests, but most quests require specialized pets with certain genes.
Lastly you can get your pets to craft certain things like buildings, or materials in the laboratory, or items.

If you're on Arena, which as Nightswan said is the quickest, easiest and cheapest place to levelup, pick your battles.
Find opponents who arent GP3 and don't have great genes. Then you'll be more likely to win. You only get XP if you win.
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
