ok, so I'm obviously new, but I looked all through the codexes, and couldn't find it. Have I discovered a new beast or what?

No, but i think theres a few other monsters that dont show up on the list .

Oh no, those guys. Hate 'em - you can defeat practically any of those things with a really good pet but any average pet gets set on fire and then defeated within a couple seconds.
Nah, they're pretty common in Savannah, I think? The Monster Codex is a little outdated so that's why they aren't on there.
