I was exploring when I clicked on a squre and I saw the message pop up that I had 'discovered the Gene: Black' or something to that effect. Could someone explain this?

There's a building with colorful bottle looking things (tubes maybe?) next to it in explore that will tell you one of your pet's genes. If all of the genes have been researched then it doesn't do anything.
