I just started and I'm at the 'research all genes' but I got confused on the pet catcher part and spent all of my money so now I can't do it! 

It won't even let me explore to look for more coins to make up the missing currency.

Please help :(

you can't research genes if you don't have vermillon.  Is that the problem?
