I know I need to get to LV 5 to get a chance of finding Lykos... but every time I get to LV 4 I get stuck on an island having no green portal... am I just having bad luck or is there any trick to get to LV5?

It depends on the level of your pet. Lover level pets travelling on islands will stop seeing green portals after a few levels on the Tundra.

Something definetely over 5. Twenty and up should guarantee that you will find one. Have you already taken Joel to the Tundra?

I tried with him twice, most likely had bad luck.
Edit: went with Joel 4 Times and always went stuck on LV2
Fireflies gets mostly stuck on LV 4
Edit 2: FInally manged to find a portal on LV 4..^^
