I was just exploring and I'm still finding event items even though the event is over. (This is with entirely new islands, not returning to ones that were first visited during the event.)

I'm very sorry, I was able to remove them only now. This is a manual update, so it was just human factor and not a coding bug. Sorry for the inconvenience.
