I want to change my avatar, because the one I currently have is something I just threw together, but it won't upload the new one

I've encountered this before also-- try this first:
Upload your avatar, and then proceed to refresh the page right afterwards.
It worked in changing my avatar, it may work for you as well. If not, then it may be a bug. P:

Blackstar, please refresh the page with Ctrl+F5 after upload, the old avatar is usually cached. Also please note that there are 2 submit buttons on preferences page. To update an avatar, you need to click "Save Preferences" button.
