Hi!
I'm unable to research any genes of some of my pets. I have enough of both vermillion and money. The wierd thing is, I have the buttons active for other pets. Is there something I'm missing?

Are the pets that you can't research busy (This includes pregnant pets, crafting, fighting...) ? You can only research a pet's genes if they are active.
You can research busy pets if you have built Laboratory Lvl 2.
