I have just gotten a squad and am very new to the battlefield. Right now I have the sqaud researching. For how long do they research?

On the battlefield page as of now I can only click two buttons at the bottom: one that has a world and magnifying class, and the button to leave the island. When will I be able to occupy a zone and start doing battles?
