http://beastkeeper.com/pet/236387 <--him, currently. I'm a bit too sleepy to check for anyone else right now, just, to summarize--I go to my female's page(literally any female symurgh), click breed, click on him, and get the message in the screenshot. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong? Uh, it's on firefox, windows 8.

Thank you for reporting.

We just tried reproducing this bug with your user data and this exact male but failed. Are you sure that you didn't switch your active pet somewhere in the process of breeding? There's quite a simple check for gender (just 0 or 1) so it actually throws this notice only when pets are really of the same gender. We will add a lock for active pet on the breeding page to prevent such issues in future.
