Where did they come from and why did they produce? I don't recall building any recently....

If to judge by the fact that they collapsed, you've built them 10 days ago and it was their last day today. You can check the reports page for the previous day too to see that you had them yesterday as well. I can dig the database to find out what pets have built them but I'm not sure how this information will make the situation clearer for you.
