I was just wondering what some of the stuff actually did, like the sundial and all the stuff with the description "A symbol of authority" and the carpet...I get the buildings but what do these add to the game?

Like the carpet is used by the embassy.

I think it just adds another layer of crafting and things to do/work for to make the crafting process a bit harder and last longer. Otherwise it may be a bit easy- all you would have to do is explore and get materials. This means you have to get more blueprints and materials. Many people have only been playing a few months and have every building.. which is awesome at first.. but then you loose things to do... Having another layer means the game lasts longer :)
