I had two unresearched genes on my pet, Revenge. I told it to "research all" thinking it would research only the remaining two unresearched genes. Instead it researched all the genes that had already been researched plus the two that weren't, taking all the money and vermillion with it.

Shouldn't it have researched just the genes that weren't researched?

Also, Does it  research genes you already have researched when you click "research one"? I have not tested it yet and hope it doesn't do that.

"Research all genes" button researches only unresearched genes, and so does "Research 1 gene".

Do you use multiple browser tabs when playing? It looks like you've done researching in several tabs. We don't have auto update of silver and vermillion balance because it will cause a huge server load, so user sees the difference in the amount only when after the page refresh (this happens when you click "Research" button too). For example, if you have 100 vermillion and open 2 tabs with pets, it will still say 100 in the first tab even if you already spent 20 for researching in the second tab.

I usually open new tabs to look at stats, compare creatures, and select the creature I want to use right now. I close all tabs then open a new tab with the creature I chose to make sure the right one is selected.

I opened several creatures in tabs to compare their genes. I decided I wanted to research the last two genes on Revenge, so I closed the other tabs, then opened a new tab with Revenge in it. Revenge was selected as my pet. Revenge was the only pet I researched that day!

I saw the change in vermillion and money happen immediately after I clicked the button. I had 750 silver. Revenge only had two unresearched genes. it took 700 silver, 7 vermillion. On the bright side it did research the two genes I was missing. The problem is that it also kept taking silver and vermillion until I ran out of silver.

--------------

And I just had it happen again! I had over 1,100 silver. I don't remember the exact amount but it was an odd number not divisible by 100. I decided to research all traits on Inkfeather. She had no traits researched.

I opened her alone in a new tab. She was the active pet. The research thing took all my money (I'm at zero now!) and 11 vermillion. She still has one gene unresearched. I should have had enough to have researched everything and still had money left!

It researched the same gene twice somewhere along the way and made me pay for it.

Is the random gene select code broken? It's like the random gene select code does not always notice when a gene has already been researched. It also appears to have taken a partial payment in silver this time, which is strange.

Calib, I see that Inkfeather has 12 genes researched. It's 1200 silver and 12 vermillion, so no wonder that it took all your money if you had ~1100 silver.

I checked database dumps to investigate the case with Revenge. Revenge had only 11 genes researched at 3:30 (it's an hour before your report, and only one more gene was researched at that day). In two hours after this he has 18 genes researched, so everything is correct: you researched 7 genes and you paid for the research of 7 genes. He still has 2 unresearched genes - this is what has remained after the research (not before it) because you didn't have enough resources to finish it.

Wait... so the genes are 1 vermillion and 100 silver.... times 20... to research all?

I thought it was 1 vermillion and 100 silver per row so researching muscle traits, for example, would cost 1 vermillion and 100 silver. I thought each row was a single trait.

Image attached to help clarify what I mean. The red numbers are rows I thought counted as one "trait". So muscles, organs, colors and markings would be four traits.

If I have it wrong and it's all a misunderstanding, it may help to reword things so others aren't confused. Maybe a little image where it shows a mockup of the pet stats and says "muscle trait 1, muscle trait 2" and so on would help?

Calib, yes, you're researching genes, not traits. Full research costs 20 vermillion and 2000 silver as every pet has 20 genes. Research button is called "research gene" too, not "research trait". There are also combo traits like firebreathing which require several dominant genes. And different genes combinations can express in the same trait, like white and black coat for some pets. Traits do not need researching as they are a part of phenotype which visible with the naked eye.
