I crafted the telescope, compass hourglass none of which were used - all still in my inventory.

You need the schemes in your inventory, not the crafted items.
I did exactly the same as you, but was fortunate to have a friend with extra schemes which she gifted to me.

I did the same thing too! I crafted the other two and even bought a compass before I realized this. Then I had to go and buy the schemes which I had just used. Frustrating!

Thanks for reporting. There should be crafted items in the recipe instead of schemes. We fixed it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
