my friend who recently joined owns a unicorn colt, a chestnut Zebra, who is the cousin of one of my unicorn fillies, a normal zebra, (colt's father and filly's mother and half-siblings) and I was wondering if there was any type of genetic penalty for breeding cousins together.

If they share a relative within three generations there's a genetic penalty

The easiest way to determine the penalty is if they share a grandparent.

This is good to know ^.^ I couldn't remember right off the bat if it was written somewhere what the limit was, but considering Boneless is in one of my Unicorn's pedigree twice, I wanted to know, too.

It's good to know where the cutoff is, especially if we start coming across pets that are somehow related to ours with the genes we need.

Exhibited Sim: YukiBaby #23145

A few bits of silver is nothing in real life...but it can be the difference between a stable expansion and limiting your breeding goals.

Here's an example, Boneless is a grandfather on both mother's side and father's side.  (That Boneless, he's everywhere... -_-)
