Silverkit blinked againist the pouring sunlight from the hole in the nursury roof as it bounced off her mothers sleeping body and reflected her two littermates, Shadowkit and Moonkit. The hole was created during a big rainstorm two nights ago and opened more when she and her littermates played Hide the Pinecone in the nursery. Her father hasn't had a chance to fix it because of wavering alliances between Shadowclan and Riverclan.

She was nearly six moons old, and was impaitent as ever to become an apprentice. She knew that the older apprentices were able to eat before the sun rose so silently, she crept over to see if her mother and siblings were asleep and quickly rushed out of the nursery to grab a small mouse. Cloudnose had told her to not eat a mouse untill a hunting patrol came back to fill up the fresh-kill pile, but Silverkit's stomach said otherwise. Quickly, she ate it, but not TOO quickly. If she ate it too quick, her stomach would hurt, and Spottedpelt would have to give her watermint and then Cloudnose would know and eventualy, Quillstar.

Quillstar is her father and clan leader. Cloudnose always said that Silverkit looks like him the most with her tabby markings and same body shape. Shadowkit was pitch black with Quillstar's blue eyes and Moonkit was a light gray tabby with Cloudnose's green eyes. Cloudnose looked like her name with her blueish-gray coat and white nose, the opposite of Silverkit.

Silverkit, upon entering, saw that Emberpaw, an older apprentice that almost completed his training stood outside the nursery with a smug look. He padded forward to her and wisked his ginger tail over her.

" I bet Cloudnose dosen't know your here, does she?" he asked. " Pretty sure kits don't eat a mouse by themselves before dawn unless they don't want anyone to find out."

Silverkit's hackles bristled at that comment, but held her tongue. Emberpaw was known to rile up other apprentices into fights because of his wording. She sure wasn't going to get into trouble because of that. Who does he think he is? A warrior? He sure ain't gonna boss me around, even when he's a warrior. she thought, careful not to unleash her thoughts on him.

Emberpaw took no notice of her bristling fur and continued: " I mean, you're pretty close to becoming an apprentice and now you're stealing food? Sure, I've seen apprentices steal before, but not kits."

" I was hungry." she blurted. " Besides, theirs plenty left."

" Yeah, but what if there weren't enough food today? Then Quillstar will be mad and everyone has to hunt extra." Emberpaw said, his voice rising a bit.

Silverkit hung her head. Emberpaw was right. What if some cat goes hungry today because of her? The Clan must be feed first. Quillstars voice spoke.

As if reading her mind, Emberpaw placed his tail on her shoulder. When there fur brushed, her first instinct was to pull away intill she realized, it was their to comfort her.

" I got to go." Silverkit whispered. It was true. If she stayed any longer, Cloudnose would wake up and see them.

" Okay." said Emberpaw. A flash of sadness crossed his face, but was gone so quickly, Silverkit thought she imagined it. He walked back to his den just as the sun began to peak, turning his coat to a flaming red.

" Goodbye." she whispered, too low for anyone to hear. and turned away to the nursery.

"Silverkit, Silverkit!" Cloudnose shouted. Silverkit, dozing in the sunshine and submerged in her thoughts, jolted awake at the sound of Cloudnse's shouting.

" Silverkit, I've been calling you at least five times. I've been telling you to go play with your littermates while your father and I fix the roof. Sunnypelt will be moving into the nursery any day now, and we can't afford her getting cold."

" Yes mother." Silverkit said, her voice giving way to a yawn.

Cloudnose tipped her head to look at her. " Are tired, Silverkit? " Cloudnose asked, "I hope you weren't up earlier because of the draft, were you?"

"No." Silverkit said, a little too quickly. " The sun kept getting in my eyes, so I couldn't sleep well."

"Oh, okay. Well, go play with your littermates, and don't get into trouble!" Cloudnose called out as Silverkit bounded toward her siblings, who were tombuling around in the dust, black and gray in a whirlwind of legs and tails that only stopped when Silverkit neared.

" Hey Silverkit! Come to play with us now?" Shadowkit said, his words coming out in short breathless gasps.

" Yeah, we're playing Whos Stronger I almost won till you came." Moonkit said, her chest puffed up as she repinned Shadowkit. " Nevermind, I won!" she said, her eyes gleaming.

" I have a better game! What about we play hide the pinecone again, only this time, out here!" Silverkit said.

"Yeah, I agree, so long as Moonkit gets off me!" Shadowkit shouted, his voice muffled by Moonkits fur.

" Oh, FINE." Moonkit said, in a long, dramatic sigh. She heaved herself off Shadowkit and he scrambled out, his fur dusty and ragged.

Just then, as Shadowkit and Moonkit began arguing, Silverkit caught a glimpse of dark ginger fur imerging from the thorn tunnel, carrying two mice by their tails. Quickly following were Robinwing and Beechfur. Emberpaw,in the lead, quickly padded over to the fresh-kill pile and placed the mice neatly at the top. Silverkits heart quickened and in her mind she thought Mouse-brain! Now suddenly your into him?! He's just some apprentice. Robinwing carried a thrush and Beechfur carried a bundle of marigold. When Moonkit saw this, she padded over to Beechfur and started talking to him. Snapped out of her thoughts, Silverkit deicided to listen to what Beechfur had to say.

" Whats that for?" Moonkit asked. Beechfur, unable to talk with his mouth full of leaves, carried on to the medicine den leaving Robinwing to explain.

" Its just a procaution, you see. With Shadowclan and Riverclan bickering, we thought it might be best if we prepare for a battle. Marigold, you see, is the best herd to treat wounds. It stops infection and heals the wound." Robinwing said.

" I hope we'll be apprentices by that time! That way we'll be able to fight." said Shadowkit, already practcing a common paw swiping move that Quillstar taught them. Moonkit neatly dodged to the side and boasted: "Well, I'll be the best fighter in the history of Thunderclan, since you can't even lay a paw on me!"

" Oh, yeah? Hows this for laying a paw on you?" Shadowkit wriggeld his butt, his tail moving as he did so. With Moonkits back turned, he pounced, his front paws struggling to get a grip on her neck as his back paws pounded her back.

"Hey!" shouted Moonkit. Silverkit hardly noticed her sisters protest because just then Emberpaw emerged from the apprentices den, his black paws kicking up dust as he padded forward to Silverkit. He dipped his head in greeting, her eyes meeting his, just then Silverkit's pet began to flood with heat. What are you now Silverkit? she thought, some fluff-brained apprentice, padding after a tom? Nope, no. I CAN'T become in love with him. I haven't even begun my training yet!

Emberpaw, hardly noticing Silverkits panic, simply whisked his tail back and forth as his eyes glowed with meaning. Wait, is he waiting for me to mention something? Or simply waiting for an invitation to speak to me? Silverkit was spared having to answer when Crowpaw, Emberpaw's littermate padded from the dirt place. A flash of suspison crossed his face, and his eyes narrowed at the sight of them together.

"Come on, Emberpaw. Bramblefur wants us on border patrol. Slightfoot and Stonefur are already waiting for us." Crowpaw said. His tail whisking back and forth impaitently. Emberpaw dipped his head aplogeticly as he turned to face Crowpaw. Emberpaw went ahead to an overhanging tree where Slightfoot and Stonefur were waiting. Before joining his brother, Crowpaw gave Silverkit a look of undisgused anger before padding away to join the patrol. Ok, so you hate me. Got it. Silverkit thought. Saddness prodded her heart as Emberpaw's tail vahnished under the thorn tunnel. Silverkit gave a long sigh.

" What are you mooning about?" Moonkit asked. In suprise, Silverkit quickly licked her chest fur so she can have time to contain her expression.

" I mean, you've been acting werid all day. Ever since this morning." Moonkit continued. Oh Starclan. Are my feelings this easy to read? What happens if Cloudnose finds out,or worse, Quillstar?

"Hey!!" Moonkit shouted, " I'm talking to you!"

"What?" Silverkit said, startled at the sound of Moonkit's shouting.

"As I was saying," Moonkit continued, her voice sounding annoyed. " If feels as if you're not here, here you know? You aren't padding after Emberpaw, are you?" She meant it as a question, but for some reason, Silverkit felt defensive.

" So what if I am?" Silverkit snapped. " You have no reason to ask me!"

A flash of hurt crossed Moonkit's face as she stared at her sister in shock. Realizing what she done, Silverkit tried to comfort her sister, but it was useless.

"Moonkit," she began, but Moonkit was already walking away. Oh Starclan! She thought, my feelings for Emberpaw have me turning agansist my own sister!

Lost in misery, Silverkit longed for her sister, but craved Emberpaw's warmth. She knew eventualy, Silverkit would have to chose between her family or Emberpaw, she just didn't expect it would be so soon. Silverkit spotted her sister making her way to the fresh-kill pile. Moonkit hesitated as she attempted to grab one of Emberpaw's mouse. She deicided instead to have Robinwing's thrush and padded away with it. Great, she thought, Now Moonkit won't even eat Emberpaw's catch's because of me. Sad and lonely, Silverkit didn't attempt to speak to her and instead shared a mouse with Shadowkit.

"Whats wrong?" Shadowkit asked, " I saw you fighting with Moonkit and now neither of you will say a word to each other."

"It's nothing really." Silverkit sighed.

"Well, obviously it is. Come on, you can tell me." His eyes glowed as though inticing her to tell him. Silverkit shifted her body uncomfotably. She should tell him, Shadowkit being her brother and all. Oh, but what if I say the wrong thing? What if he just see's me as a kit with fluff for brains padding after Emberpaw?

"Well," she began, "Moonkit thinks I'm padding after Emberpaw."

"And? Is it true?" Shadowkit asked, lowering his voice.

" Kind of? I don't know. Maybe I am. I just can't help it! Whenever he's gone, I want to be near him! And Moonkit can't possibly understand my feelings right now, so I snapped at her because of that." Silverkit groaned. " And now she won't even speak to me!'

"You guys are sisters, one little quarrel won't change that. And I'm sure Moonkit just wanted to know if you are in love with Emberpaw," Looking at Silverkit's face, he quickly added, "or not!"

"Thanks Shadowkit. But I think I'm gonna go to my nest now." Heart heavy with sorrow, Silverkt slowly walked back to her nest, where she plopped down witha sigh.

...

It was almost sunhigh when Silverkit finnaly had the urge to step outside and greet Emberpaw. He was back from patrol, and brought loads of prey. She hadn't seen Moonkit in a while, and didn't feel the need to seek her out, unlike Emberpaw. Emberpaw padded toward her, dipping his head in greeting. Silverkit brushed away her sadness and greeted him with a meow.

"Hi Silverkit." Emberpaw said, gently nuzzling her as Silverkit let out a purr. She drove her nose deep into his fur, inhaling his scent. He smelled of forest and mice, making her think of the morning they met, just yesterday. It felt right to be with him, yet being toghether made Silverkit think of Moonkit, and guilt clenced her heart.

May Starclan light your path.
