You can gain quite a lot of silver through questing. You do actually have to accept them though. Is it possible you forgot? Otherwise you might have your beasts on stud duty or an Item for sale. Outside of a bug those are the only ways I know to gain a lot of coin quick.

Look under Manor - Reports. It'll tell you what happened. Maybe you lost an auction and your bid money was returned to you or something.
