I've just started playing a few days ago and I noticed one of my beasts' tactical manuevers refer to them as a hero ?

Descendant of Heroes is any pet with a green star.
Level 50 pets bred together will give a GP1 (single star) baby.
Level a GP1 up to 50 and breed with a similar one, and the baby will be GP2 (two stars).
Similar for GP3.
GP3 is the highest "descendant of heroes" boost you can get. Every stat is +30.
It does give you tactics as well, like extra elemental attack points, and leadership.
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
