I fought an Umdelebhi (the plant thing) that was on the water instead of usually how it is on land. I think this is supposed to be coding for a Kelpie but it was clearly one of the plant monsters as it did not drop the liquor.

I feel scammed, man. That coulda been one of those kelpies but nah it was just a plant monster.

Don't have screenshots since I fought the monster and defeated it before I recognized it was floating on a water tile.

Fixed. These monsters didn't replace Kelpies, they were just bathing :) A Kelpie could still appear on an island with such a water lover.

I recently started playing this game this year and got the kelpie news. I try to fight them, but I don't win ever. Is it based on skill, or your level, cause I need the Kelli sample, or at least want some.

The kelpies can be difficult based on what your pet is. Are you using a 3GP pet? Does it have negative genes? Seeing that you are new it is no surprise you may have some trouble with the kelpies. They have similar genes to Cockatrice and if you have had trouble fighting those in the arena in the past chances are you will not be able to defeat kelpies. 

They are as strong or stronger than island guardians and can have the following genes: Acid Strike (Acid Gland + Spitting Muscle), Poisonous Teeth, Venomous Claws, Venomous Skin, Stench, Petrifying Gaze, Regeneration with at least 3 of these genes for any given Kelpie.
