Hello I am new and in the tutorial I had to do a battle, when I won the battle, the pet I fought got given to me, if I sign any of my pets up to a battle and lose, do my pets get given to the player who won?

No, that was only for the tutorial, thankfully. You can battle without fear of losing your pets.
