Is there a way to cancel pets/items put up for auction? If not I really think there should be - I just changed my mind about a pet I had put up for trade, and now it looks like there's no way to get it back :(
Been inactive for months, but thinking about coming back for a bit..?

There is no way to do so. There was a suggestion made about this that you can go support, but for now your pet will be stuck there.

You could have a friend buy it back for you and just repay them.

If you buy it out yourself you'll get the pet back and not lose any money.
