I was thinking it would be great fun to put rare/special breeds into the population during holiday special events. Granted this would be awhile off on implementing but no harm in thinking of the future! (maybe easter?.... jackalopes???)

Certain special and extremely rare breeds could be caught during holidays. They have a very slim chance of taking the place of certain creatures in the capture pet map. Ontop of that said they should have a high resistance to being caught.

They should also change from a regular creature to a "rare" breed after capture so people could not take advantage of observers and cartographer. In otherwords maybe someone sees a dragon at the waterfall, captures it and SURPRISE it is actually one of the rare breeds.

This isn't a full formed thought but if folks like it maybe they can build on it. :)
